The Rug Rules!

How big should your rug be? In general, the bigger the better! Nothing shrinks a room faster than a too small rug in the seating area.

There are different rules depending on your particular room arrangement, but here are some good rules of thumb to follow:

• If your furniture is on the rug, allow at least one or two feet of wood showing around the perimeter.

• If your furniture is off the rug, then make sure your deepest piece (most likely your sofa) is only off the rug one inch.

• If your room is small, keep all of your furniture on the rug, and leave no more than one foot around the perimeter. The idea here is to go as big as you can so you don’t break up the room visually.

• A dining room rug should extend a minimum of three feet from the edge of the table. You chairs should always be fully on the rug.
